Writer Bio

Clarion Faculty Director since 2010, Professor of Ethnic Studies and Literature at UCSD. My new book Imagining the Future of Climate Change: World-Making through Science Fiction and Activism was published by the University of California Press in January 2018 in the American Studies Now! Critical Histories of the Present series.

Writing Style

I love to do research and it shows up in everything I write. I connect science fiction and fantasy to social activism and histories of colonialism, race, climate change, and shifting parameters of gender/sexuality. I am trying my hand at returning to my old love, writing science fiction stories.

Writing Goal

Finish 5000 word science fiction story by the end of the workshop. Writing a long review essay for Feminist Studies: "Speculative Writing in the Wake of Octavia E. Butler as Feminist Theory." Finishing my entry on "Genre" for the new NYU Press anthology Keywords for Comics Studies I am co-editing with comics scholars Deborah Whaley and Ramzi Fawaz.
